On Ice

2850 m above sea level

Partly Cloudy

Antarctica Patriot Hills

-90.0000 / -90.0000

Our target is the 90°S - The South Pole. When Amundsen arrived there 14th December 1911, he found nothing - To his great relief. Scott, on the other hand, found Amundsen’s tent and a letter to the Norwegian King Haakon.
The contrast in devastating.
Today the polar explorer finds the Amundsen-Scott Base. It is a huge scientific base. In winder a few handful of men and women overwinter there in isolation. In the few, not so hostile summer months, hundred + scientists poor into the base for their quest for knowledge.
The fly in from New Zealand. The Explorers ski in from the other side to arrive at this strange place after weeks and weeks of seing absolutely nothing.
But the joy of arriving there is maybe as great as Amundsen's. reaching something like that just have to be personal. No other inspiration can force your body to go in.
